How to use a Butt Plug

Jun 6, 2023

Here’s some top tips for safe and enjoyable anal play, specifically using butt plugs…
1. Choose:

Butt plugs come in many different sizes, shapes, and materials. Start small and smooth, and be sure to choose a plug made from body-safe materials like platinum silicone or stainless steel. The most important thing is that it has an adequate flared base or a handle, to prevent it from getting lost inside you! Never put anything without a base that’s wider than the stem/shaft into your anus, unless you want to risk a trip to A&E.

2. Prepare:

Before using a butt plug, clean your anus and genitas thoroughly. Take a shower or use a mild, unscented soap and warm water to wash the anus. Avoid harsh chemicals or strong soaps, as they may irritate the sensitive skin.

3. Lubrication:

The anus doesn’t naturally lubricate like the vagina, so it’s essential to use a generous amount of water-based lubricant*. Apply lubricant to the anus and the surface of the butt plug. *We recommend water-based as a simple option, but you can check out our other blogs and posts on lube to choose the right lube for you.

4. Comfort:

Find a position that allows you to relax and have easy access to the anus. You can lie on your back with your knees bent, kneel on all fours, or lean against a wall.

5. Gentle insertion:

Gently press the tip of the lubed butt plug against the anus. Remember to relax your muscles as much as possible, as tension can make insertion more difficult and uncomfortable. Slowly and gently push the plug inside, using a slight twisting motion if needed. Take it slow and gradual, you are worthy of taking your time.

6. Tune in:

Pay attention to body sensations. As the plug goes in, listen to your body and go at your own pace. If you experience any pain or discomfort, stop immediately and remove the plug. Do not force it. Where else in your body is it activating pleasure receptors?

7. Stillness:

Once the butt plug is inserted comfortably, leave it in place for a few minutes to get accustomed to the sensation. If it’s your first time, you may want to keep it in for a shorter duration.

8. Removal:

To remove the butt plug, gently pull on the flared base or handle. Don’t forget to breathe and relax into it. There’s no rush, take your time. It should come out smoothly. If you encounter any resistance, stop and try to relax your muscles before attempting again. Never yank or force the plug out. If your muscles contract a lot during orgasm you may want to time taking it out either before you come, or if you (or your partner) can time it right, just at the brink!

9. Cleaning:

After use, clean the butt plug thoroughly with warm water and mild soap. Make sure it’s completely dry before storing it.

10. Hygiene:

Avoid sharing butt plugs or other anal toys with others. If you plan to switch from anal play to vaginal play, use new, clean toys.

Remember: always listen to your body, and communicate with your partner(s) if you are engaging in anal play with others. Every individual and every body is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. If you’re uncertain or have any concerns, consult a healthcare professional or a sex educator for personalised advice.
